Good vision is essential for a child to reach their full potential. More than 80 per cent of the information children received about the world comes through their eyes. Vision problems can severely impact on a child’s educational, physical and social development.

Everyone has come to understand that teeth need to be checked regularly for signs of decay, yet few people are aware that eyes also need to be examined on a regular basis.

Ideally, all children should be examined at two years of age. During the school years their vision can change rapidly. Your optometrist will advise you on how often your child’s eyes should be examined.

You should keep in mind that quick screenings (which are being conducted in fewer schools throughout Australia) are no substitute for an optometric examination. A thorough initial examination takes about 30 minutes and attracts a Medicare rebate.
